There is a famous quote often misattributed to Thomas Jefferson that goes: "When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny." It doesn't matter who said it. There is truth to this sentiment.
Right now, there is a high level of anxiety inside the American establishment.
It's no secret that the American people are unhappy. It's no secret that we're feeling stressed and financially strained. It's no secret that we don't like it when our political system is so obviously rigged against us. On top of that, we have lost trust in our society's institutions. The justice system is a farce. Just about every political leader is bought and paid for. Mainstream media is untrustworthy.
We are living through an awakening. You can't stop it because it is already happening. You can't reverse it, because we are already well on our way. If you're on TikTok, you're watching it unfold before your eyes every day.
Look at the rise of censorship happening. Governments need to start censoring things when they lose legitimacy. Powerful institutions turn to censorship when we stop believing them.
Look at Cop City in Atlanta. Ask yourself why police need more special training for coping with protests. Because protecting private property and suppressing free speech go hand in hand. Because the people who govern this country are scared - of us.
Look at all this discussion of a Trump dictatorship. Arresting your critics or turning a nation's intelligence agencies into a leader's personal attack dogs - that was the worst part of Stalinism! {Please see Kash Patel and Mike Davis} Our entire lives we have heard that's the kind of thing they do in North Korea - throw you into a gulag for criticizing Dear Leader. Even Trump's most devoted supporters won't like the fact that an impulsive Facebook post could potentially get you sent to an Alabama slave labor camp, probably answering customer service calls for AT&T for 10 or 20 years. Though, who knows, the prison benefits package is probably more generous than paid AT&T employees get. At least you don't have to worry about having a roof over your head.
Authoritarianism is the kind of system where people fear their government. That is the next logical step for a political system that has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of its people. Drop the hammer down. Because authoritarianism is how you preserve the existing class structure - by force. And we are looking down the barrel at a true-blue American dictatorship potentially taking over.
Because right now, our leaders are scared. Of us. They should be. Our establishment is right to fear us. Because we are the only ones who can stop them.
Let's make them pay.
