There's no end to the lessons to draw from this truly weird historical fact. I was solicited once to promote a screenplay about Butler. Alas, it wasn't up to standard. But even if it was, who would have produced it? I'd be tempted to write my own screenplay in collaboration with others, but again, not only would no one in the cinema business touch it, they would be right to refuse. The unseen fascists have ways of dealing with those who attempt to expose even their ancestors. The fact that they survived such a scandal with regard to democracy tells you something about what kind of democracy they "allowed" to exist. And as I mentioned earlier, however much you and I remind our public of the melodrama of Smedley Butler (it is neither tragedy nor comedy), he will remain literally erased from history. Prescott Bush, who later became senator of Connecticut, summed it all up until two of his lineage occupied the White House. I also find it ironic that Butler spilled the beans to... J Edgar! That helps to put everything in perspective.
