The fascists (ordinary US capitalists who simply believed in the truth of fascism) tried to depose FDR and place the military hero Smedley as their figurehead. Butler himself foiled the plot -- officially known as the Business Plot -- and that too was successfully erased from history (oddly, with a little complicity from FDR himself, who passively accepted it). One last point: it isn't just the classic defense contractors but also most of the big tech industries that are part of the "national socialism" that dominates the US economy, as Dwight D once pointed out.
